Good point Pat. A little time spent better familiarizing yourself with the client is time well spent. Thanks again for commenting.

And depending on the free CMS, e.g., Joomla, DotNetNuke ... and the skill level of the client, you could spend many, many hours in training them. I like to meet and get a good feel for what they actually need from a website first. Some clients are asking for Joomla websites who really only need a "brochure" type site. So it all comes down to being very thorough in the proposal phase.

Thanks for stopping by and comment Carl.

I did refer to CMS systems in my article. Certainly there is an added cost for a pure commercial CMS, but I am not in agreement that the cost to the client is zero when using an open source CMS like WordPress.

Although the software is free to use, my experience in setting up, configuring, tweaking and training the client in the use of the open source software has a value as well.

What about the price of the CMS used? It might be zero using the open sources as Joomla or Drupal, or free editions of commercial software like Kentico or Sitefinity, but thousands if you go for pure commercial CMS.
