Thanks for stopping by Chris. I am glad that my article helped you out. It's always nice to know that someone else has solved their problem and that I could help.

David, thanks for the help with this! I've been over here trying to write all kind of conditional functions when the answer is this simple. I wish they wouldn't document the Codex so vaguely...

Thanks for stopping by Jeff and for pointing out a useful plugin. Since I originally wrote this post I have learned that just hovering over the post title in the Admin dashboard allows you to see the post ID in your individual browser footer bar.

Doing so avoids the need to use yet another plugin. If you are anything like me it's hard to keep a handle on all the plugins. With all the WordPress upgrades some plugins fail to work, so I have tried to minimize my reliance on all but the best of them.

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for stopping by. I am glad the article was useful to you.

I have noticed that the newer versions of WordPress no longer list the category number in a user friendly manner. However, if you go to Manage->Categories in the Admin Dashboard, and hover over the category link, you will see the URL of the link listed in your browser. It will be apparent from that link what the cateogry ID number is as it is listed as a parameter as cat_ID=8, or whatever.

Good luck!

Thanks for this great article! One thing I noticed is that when I went to Manage > Categories it listed the categories but did not show their number. The test category I had created was the 2nd one (after uncategorized) so I just guessed it was #2. That didn't work, so I tried 3 and that did it.
