Pay It Forward with Kiva

kiva-2.jpgPart of my normal blog reading takes me over to ProBlogger. While reading today’s article about productivity tools for bloggers, I was taken to a link for a blog named Millionaire Mommy Next Door.

I took some time to look around this website, and found it to be an interesting story and an interesting read. What particularly caught my eye was a reference to a charitable organization called Kiva. Further reading taught me that Kiva is an organization that administers loans to enterprising people worldwide who cannot get loans through normal banking channels. Most of these people live in third world or undeveloped countries where they struggle to be successful and to provide for their families.

Earlier this year I had seen a television show about a similar organization. Kiva, however, is internet based and even accepts PayPal. How easy can it be, I thought. I signed up and began to do my part to help others who are less fortunate than I am.

Please take the time look at Kiva’s website and see if it might be something that interests you. It is an opportunity for each of us, as individuals, to make small business loans to enterprising people in impoverished countries. Your loan through Kiva goes directly to an individual of your choice. Small amounts of money can make a tremendous difference in their ability to be successful and to prosper. And guess what? The odds are overwhelming that your entire loan will be paid back, over time, by the person to whom you loaned the money. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

Check out Kiva. I was fascinated by the idea and with how easy it was to make a loan. You might just find it interesting, too!

I’m so happy to hear that you stumbled upon my web site and took action! Awesome! This is what paying it forward is all about. I love love love how easy it is to use Kiva. Their whole system is brilliant.

Thanks for the nice feedback about my story, too.

It was easy to particpate, and I think that is a large part of their success at Kiva.

Thank you for bringing Kiva to my attention. Although I am not a “millionaire mommy”, it’s nice to share the wealth nonetheless!

Keep up the good work over at your blog!

I thought I would give a brief update: My wife and I made five loans to Kiva participants in September. Two of those five loans have *already* made their first payment on the outstanding balance.

It truly is a wonderful program and an opportunity to help people less fortunate help themselves!

Further update: As of October 30, 2007 each of our five loans has begun receiving payments! Microfinance truly does work. You can make a difference, too!

On December 9th, 2007 the first of my five loans has been totally paid off. It truly is a miracle. Microfinance works and it works well!
