Email Spam & You

spam.jpgMy friend Mike Cherim recently posted an article about his experience with email spam. This got me thinking about all of the spam email that I receive, too.

I receive over 70% spam in my email. Maybe some day I will need all that Viagra, or all those penny stock tips, but for now I just push [Delete]. No harm, no foul, but I bet I miss an occassional legitimate email as I delete the numerous spam emails.

Come to think of it, though, I bet my postal mail is about 70% unsolicited garbage, too. Fortunately, it’s easier to delete the spam email than it is to process the postal spam. For me, this involves handling the postal mail, tearing off my address, shredding it in a cross-cut shredder and placing the mail in the Recycle container. Each week I take the recycled paper out to the curb so they trash men can collect it, recycle it, and have someone else send it to me in some future unsolicited postal mail.

I would be interested in hearing from others about their experience with email spam. Do you receive it? How do you deal with it and what do you do to protect yourself against it?

I just sent off an email asking others how they fought spam with a big sword. I began to receive email spam once I actually blog posted. Somehow that is. The things I get are bogus @mydomain.com names like Simpanenioq@mydomain.com (where mydomain is my actual domain name)
I get about 14 a day, which to me is too much. My POBOX gets some, but not much. So, I too am in the same spam infested pond, fishing out the good emails and tossing back the bad. Let me know what you figure out.

I get those “bogus” names sent to my domain, too. I think it might have to do with a “catch all” email configuration that I have set up with my mail servers, which of course is designed to capture mis-addressed but legitimate email. It works against us in these spam situations, however, and sends all the “bogus” names to the catchall address.

Spoofing domains… yep, I get those too of course. Or the occasional “undeliverable message” foo@mydomain.com sent. As if.

Not sure if this will help you David, but I couldn’t live without my various inbox folders. It’s very beneficial for me in helping ensure I don’t miss the mails I want to miss. One of the secrets is to not be inundated by spam in any one inbox folder. This helps a lot with that in spreading them out a bit. http://green-beast.com/blog/?p=131
